Architectural competition

Elielinaukio development Oy, in cooperation with the city of Helsinki, organized an architectural competition for the renewal of Elielinaukio and Asema-aukio, which was launched in November 2020. The goal was to find a design solution that takes into account the special features of the area and the city’s starting points and offers high-quality street and open space solutions. In addition, the plan had to take into account sufficient land use efficiency and possible versatile functional content, such as office workplaces, retail and leisure services and various meeting places.

The competition was implemented as an invitational competition, for which five meritorious architectural firms were selected through pre-qualification.

Two proposals were selected for the second phase, where the contestants’ task was to develop their competition proposals based on the feedback they received from the jury. In December 2021, the Norwegian Snøhetta architectural office’s competition proposal Klyga was chosen as the winner of the competition, which was described as a collective character and an independent entity in terms of architecture.

Currently, the city image and functional conditions of the winning competition proposal will be further developed in the further planning phase.
